Every year more than 30 million Americans turn to their dermatologists for dry skin treatment each year. Dry, itchy skin is high on the list of complaints, says the National Center for Health.
If you are an active diva who spends a lot of time outdoors, the cold weather can dehydrate your skin. If you come into contact with chemicals at work or you have a hobby like gardening or quilting, your skin needs extra care.
Even everyday household chores, like dishwashing and cleaning, can expose your skin to chemicals that can cause damage or allergies.
"The dehydration we experience in these winter months is one of the major causes of dry skin," says Dr. Peter Helton, a board-certified dermatologist from Newport Beach, CA. "Exposure to chemicals and irritants in the environment is another major cause. Once the natural oil barrier on the skin is destroyed you are open to dry skin problems and irritation of the skin."
Until now, dry skin sufferers have not had many effective options and all the conventional lotions on the market only add emollients and moisturizers to the skin that mask the dry, itchy sensation for a while. They don't address the cause of the problem. So as soon as the lotion wears off, the skin feels dry and itchy once more. A current advertisement on TV for a skin lotion even uses this phrase:
"The trouble with dry skin is – it keeps coming back."
Healthy skin stays moist, supple and waterproof because the natural oils and moisturizing factors form a barrier that keeps moisture in and harsh chemicals and irritants out. Exposure to water, soap, chemicals and environmental irritants destroys this barrier and your skin can become rough, dry and itchy.
21st Century Formulations spent five and half years developing an effective shielding lotion that bonds with the skin and forms a protective barrier that mimics the skin's natural action.

"Glycerin has been the standard against which all humectants are measured (no other humectant pulls in as mush moisture as glycerin.) This new substance has a moisturizing factor 10 times higher than glycerin and we were able to include it in Skin MD Natural."
