If you think shrugs are just for flat-chested girls and premium denim just for size 0s? Think again! There's a way to wear even the most baffling fashion trend if you know how.
1. Shrugs - The adorable layered look of a shorter, bolero-style sweater (a.k.a "shrug") over a longer tunic or camisole is still going strong. While contrasting colors are big, the easiest way to wear this look is to wear all one color. Make sure that while your colors match, the fabrics are varied for visual interest (for example: a brick red crochet shrug over a brick red satin cami).
2. Black - Sure, black is slimming, but after seasons of froth and color, it can seem stark. The trick to wearing black now is to wear it head-to-toe. Don't punch it up with color or metallics; instead, wear black-on-black sequined or embroidered tops, skirts and dresses. Pair them with black shoes, black hose, even layered jet beads (a very hip look). Keep it interesting by wearing black with lots of texture and detail (ruching, ruffles, tucks, embellishment). Don't be afraid to mix up fabric: velvet, satin, cord, denim, etc.
3. Premium Jeans - It almost seems unfair that the hottest trend in years -- expensive, upscale jeans from the likes of Paige Premium Denim, Rock and Republic, etc. -- doesn't come in sizes larger than a 12. Fortunately, many manufacturers are getting in on the designer jean craze and brands like Lane Bryant (Buy Direct) and Liz Claiborne - (Buy Direct)are producing their own upscale jeans in larger sizes. |
